Grade/Salary: Research Officer, with a starting salary of €31,729 per annum. The current salary scale is €31,729 to €62,700.  

Post Type: Temporary Externally Funded Non Grant-in-Aid contract post, the indicative duration of which is 15 months, subject to contract.

A panel may be formed from which future similar vacancies may be filled; such a panel will remain active for a maximum period of 12 months.

Basic Function: Teagasc is seeking to recruit a scientist with a proven track record in Food/Dairy science with experience working with dairy ingredients and infant formula.  The successful candidate will have responsibility for studying the structural and functional properties of food ingredients and their interactions through the end to end process of infant formula manufacture.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

    To plan, organise and execute experiments and trials as per project plans.  This may include draft formulation design of experiment, ingredient characterisation, functionality testing, new method development, product prototyping and functionality of the proposed product.
    To conduct methodologies for stability testing of liquid and powdered infant formulations: including chemistry, rheological and microstructural testing.
    To propose, plan and deliver technical and scientific knowledge to support in innovation and renovation projects.
    To generate and record observations and experimental data in a systematic and professional manner.
    To generate, critically review and draw conclusions from analytical data.
    To engage in routine analysis of qualification of existing and new ingredients in an infant formula matrix.
    To develop ingredients for use in nutritional beverages.

Personal Specification:

Qualifications Essential

    Candidates must have an honours Level 8 degree in food science or a related discipline.

Qualifications Desirable

    A postgraduate degree and/or research experience in food/dairy science would be a distinct advantage.

Skills Essential

    Excellent laboratory skills, organization skills, report writing and data analysis.

Skills Desirable

    Proven record of scientific communications.
    Aptitude for multidisciplinary approaches.
