The production of raw materials of animal origin occupies a key position in the Aragon agrofood sector. Apart from playing a significant economic role in the region’s primary sector, livestock production serves as a boosting factor in the agrofood transformation industry, and serves as a strong backbone for rural development. The lines of research in Department 2 thus aim to maintain and foster dynamism and competitiveness in this sector on a national and international level, while at the same time guaranteeing its socio-economic and environmental sustainability.
Within this context, Department 2 pursues lines of research concerning all conditions that are essential to food quality and safety. Its areas thus include the characterization and improvement of genetic resources, the scientific study of the physiological bases of all aspects related with the breeding and health of animals for slaughter, the development of technologies designed to reduce illnesses both in livestock and in the human public health sector, and the improvement of production efficacy and quality associated with the final products obtained.
This area of research is coordinated by Manuel Fondevila, PhD, the Head of Department 2, which comprises a total of 122 members divided into 15 research groups.
Those 15 research groups comprise 4 main lines of investigation, divided into 9 sub-lines and a total of 35 specific actions.
