Research Assistant or Research Fellow in Nutrition and Infectious Diseases (Nagasaki, Japan)

The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine is seeking to appoint an early stage nutrition researcher with an interest in infectious diseases or an infectious disease specialist with an interest in nutrition. The successful candidate is required to manage and support the development of new research projects with Professor Sharon Cox (jointly appointed to Nagasaki University and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, UK) and to contribute to the teaching and academic life at the School of Tropical Medicine and Global Health (TMGH), Nagasaki University, Japan. 

The main initial role will be to manage Prof Cox’s tuberculosis (TB) and nutrition research projects in the Philippines. Ongoing projects include an inpatient cohort study and a multisite outpatient cohort study following TB outpatients throughout their course of anti-TB treatment. These form part of a developing program of research in TB. The long-term aim is to develop interventions to improve diagnosis and management of malnutrition in TB patients and the integration of evidence-based nutrition into TB control programmes. The appointed person is expected to contribute to MSc level teaching at TMGH if applying at Research Fellow level.

At Research Assistant level, candidates must have an MSc in a relevant topic and demonstrable basic statistical analysis and data management skills, for example in producing summary reports. They should also have experience of working in a project team in a healthcare setting. At Research Fellow level, candidates should have a PhD in a relevant topic or equivalent experience; demonstrable project/team management skills, preferably of health care professionals and experience in the use of statistical software preferably Stata or ‘R’. At both levels, a clinical dietetics license or clinical professional qualification would be an advantage.

The post is based at the School of Tropical Medicine and Global Health, Nagasaki, Japan with frequent travel and a planned initial period at Nagasaki University collaborative research site in San Lazaro Hospital, Manila, Philippines. The post is currently funded until October 2019, and may be extended based on further funding. The salary will be on the Academic scale, Research Assistant Grade 5 scale in the range £33,567 to £38,533 or Research Fellow Grade 6 scale in the range £38,533 - £43,759 per annum. The post will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service.  Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year, pro rata for part time staff. In addition to this there are discretionary “Director’s Days”. Membership of the USS Pension Scheme is available.
