Social Sciences Global Leader - International Potato Center

The International Potato Center (CIP) is seeking a dynamic and creative Leader for their Global Science Team on Social Sciences, Nutrition and Innovation Systems. The Science Leader will provide intellectual and strategic leadership for the implementation of rigorous social science research contributing to global understanding of root and tuber-based agro-food systems and their contribution to development.

The position: The Science Leader will report to the Deputy Director General for Research and Development and the preferred location is at CIP’s headquarters in Lima, Peru; with frequent international travels in Africa, Asia and Latin America. The purpose of the position is to provide strategic leadership for all aspects of Social Science research in CIP to ensure a stream of high quality and influential science products contributing to deliver CIP’s 2014-2023 Strategy and Corporate Plan (SCP). The Science Leader will provide disciplinary oversight and, mentoring   to CIP’s team of social scientists who work in a wide range of projects worldwide as part of the CGIAR Research Programs (CRP’s). The position is part of CIP’s multi-disciplinary Science Leadership Team and is expected to help expand CIP’s global research partnerships and contribute to resource mobilization in support of this work.

Duties and responsibilities

Science Leadership

    Provide strategic science leadership for Social Sciences, Nutrition, Innovation Systems and Gender disciplines.
    Establish CIP as a significant and innovative global partner in Social Science and nutrition research concerned with agro-food systems.
    Promote interdisciplinary exchange and strategic research planning within CIP and with research partners towards the SCP.

Strategic Management and Planning

    Contribute to the development of Business Plans for CIP’s strategic programs that have a global and regional focus ensuring strong engagement of the social science team.
    Manage research projects and financial resources directly associated with this position.
    Oversee annual work planning for the Social Science team and provide direct guidance and supervision to key members of this team.

Partnership Development and Resource Mobilization

    Establish and strengthen strategic partnerships with relevant advanced research institutions to enrich and diversify social science approaches and methods in support of CIP’s SCP.
    Contribute to resource mobilization for stronger Social Science capacity at CIP, as part of CIP’s program development and institutional resource mobilization drive. 
    Represent CIP in international meetings to strengthen CIP’s contributions to science and development dialogue, including CGIAR, partner and donor forums.

Staff Development and Team Building

    Lead, mentor and further develop a strong, motivated, and diverse Social Science team, strengthening quantitative and qualitative methodological skills, research networks, and publication records.

Selection criteria:

    PhD in Agricultural Economics, Anthropology, Sociology, Economics or other Social Science discipline.
    Relevant experience of 10 years as a researcher and research manager, including at least 5 years in a senior role coordinating international research portfolios.
    Sound knowledge of the international context of food security and social and sustainable development.
    Sound command of up-to-date quantitative or qualitative research methodologies.
    Good track record in Social Science research and relevant scientific publications.
    Direct experience conducting and supervising research in a multi-cultural environment and in a variety of developing country contexts.
    Demonstrated success in building and managing collaborative research partnerships.
    Proven capacity to manage multi-disciplinary research teams and mentoring young scientists.
    Demonstrated success in project proposal design and attracting significant research funding.
    Project management experience.
    Strong written and oral communication skills in English are essential. Spanish, French or other languages are an asset.

Conditions: Employment contract will be for a three-year term with the possibility of renewal. Salary will be internationally competitive, paid in US dollars, and commensurate with experience. CIP provides additional benefits including employer-paid medical, life and disability insurance and retirement benefits. Allowances toward relocation, housing, home leave travel, dependents’ education and annual leave are also provided.
