PhD student - Nutritional combined Environmental Life Cycle Assessment - ETH Zurich

The Sustainable Food Processing group of Prof. Alexander Mathys, Institute of Food, Nutrition and Health, Department of Health Sciences and Technology, at ETH Zurich is recruiting early 2016 or by mutual agreement a PhD student - Nutritional combined Environmental Life Cycle Assessment.

The group uses a combination of emerging food safety approaches, novel protein processing and life cycle sustainability assessment to target fundamental challenges in food science and society such as food security. We are looking for a candidate who is highly motivated to work in a project that aims the combination of nutritional profiles within food with environmental life cycle assessment of the respective value chains. Research question around the impact of the nutritional quality, innovative food processing techniques and bioavailability will be investigated. An interdisciplinary approach in strong collaboration with other ETH research groups is foreseen.

The candidate should have excellent academic qualifications, good communication skills and a strong self-motivation. In addition, enthusiasm and talent to engage in sustainability and engineering questions and the underlying mechanisms as well as in theoretical/modelling aspects is required. Experience in sustainability assessment, food nutrition and food processing principles will be considered a plus. Furthermore, the successful candidate must have a Master degree (or equivalent) in Environmental Engineering, Bioprocessing/Food Technology/Food Engineering or a closely-related area.
