Applications are invited from suitably qualified scientists for this PDRA position based in the Department of Plant Sciences at Cambridge University involving extensive collaboration. This post is to work on Modelling the dynamics of cereal crop canopies: nitrogen response, carbon capture and senescence. Supervised by Professor Chris Gilligan in the Epidemiology and Modelling group, collaborating with ADAS and the NIAB in the UK, the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Nanjing and other Chinese organisations.

The Newton-funded positions are intended to find solutions to a crucial global problem by supporting crop breeding and extension agencies. ADAS (lead: Professor Roger Sylvester-Bradley) and the NIAB (lead: Dr Tina Barsby) have extensive experience in developing and disseminating efficient germplasm and farming practices.

Applications are invited from candidates with a PhD in applied mathematics, statistics or a related subject. Familiarity with mathematical modelling of biological systems would be an advantage. Knowledge of some or all of C++ and R languages and ArcGIS software is highly desirable. The ideal candidate will be able to work closely with experimental biologists in the UK and China to incorporate realistic biological processes into the models. Good communication skills are essential as the post holder will need to work well in a team and collaborate across the N-Circle partnership. Candidates should also have experience of communicating modelling results effectively to non-technical clients and policy agencies. The post-holder will be based in the Epidemiology and Modelling Group at Cambridge where there is substantial expertise in modelling and parameter estimation. The postholder will lead the expansion into work on explicit modelling of crop growth, supported by input from Prof. Sylvester-Bradley and Dr Daniel Kindred (ADAS), Prof. Howard Griffiths and a postdoc in crop physiology.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 31 December 2018 in the first instance.
