Eligibility:  PhD in a relevant discipline with up to 3 years’ (max.) relevant experience.

Location: Teagasc Food Research Centre Moorepark, Fermoy, Co. Cork

Training Rate: Appointment will be at the minimum point of the Post Doctoral Level 1 (PD1) scale (€33,975).

The current PD1 scale is as follows: €33,975 (min.); €34,974; €36,003 (max.) Increments will be awarded annually* subject to performance and completion of the prescribed training plan.

Basic Function of the post: This post-doctoral appointee will be responsible for the valuable APC Culture Collection that has been developed over the last 10 years of the Centre.  This candidate will be experienced in microbiology and will have an appreciation for the valuable asset that the culture collection has, and continues to become.  This candidate will work closely with a technologist within the Culture to Product platform.  The main activities of this postdoctoral scientist will involve the isolation, characterisation and curation of bioactive microorganisms for potential use as bio-therapeutics developed through the research programmes of the APC and delivery of high quality preparations of strains to APC researchers, ensuring there is no cross contamination of APC strains.

Background: The Teagasc post-doctoral programme provides training and development opportunities for early career scientists that enhances their experience of learning and equips them with the necessary skills for the next stage of their chosen career in research.

Person Specification

Essential

    PhD in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Fermentation technology.
    Relevant research experience not to exceed 3 years’ post-PhD.
    Experience in molecular biology techniques.

Desirable

    Experience in propagation of obligate anaerobes and fastidious microorganisms.
    Bioinformatics and next generation sequencing experience.
    Experience in genome sequencing.
