Junior Researcher Hydroinformatics (1.0 FTE) - UNESCO-IHE

The UNESCO-IHE Department of Integrated Water Systems and Governance provides post-graduate education and training in various areas of water management. In addition the Department carries out research and supports the development of education and research capacity in universities and other knowledge centres in the developing world.Within this Department, the Hydroinformatics Chair Group (HI) focuses on developing advanced methods of water modelling, forecasting optimisation, building computer-based systems for assisting water management, as well as providing training in the areas of hydroinformatics at Master and PhD level.

Description
As a new staff member of this interdisciplinary group you will be engaged in multiple tasks for supporting hydroinformatics projects.

Responsibilities
This position is meant to provide support on the use of hydrological hybrid modelling approaches (combination of process-based and data-driven techniques), and their implementation, in online systems using client-server technologies in web platforms. A main part of the responsibilities of this position will aim at implementing a prototype system for analysing trade-offs between various types of hydrological flow models and forecasting models using global data sets. This is meant to provide an important basic support in data poor regions.
Aside of this, it is expected that the person hired will contribute to the activities of the Hydroinformatics Laboratory, and for participating in modelling studies and development work for several running research projects.
Depending on the level of expertise the candidate is expected also to support the practical work of students. Support on model setup, connecting Dll components for DSS, working with python, MATLAB and R for optimization problems, and others.

Requirements
? MSc degree in the field of Hydrological modelling, Hydroinformatics, Flood Risk Management or other related field, from a University of high standing.
? Knowledge of various hydrological and hydraulic modelling paradigms: physically-based, data-driven and hybrid
? Experience in water resources modelling and developing online platforms
? Experience in the use of MATLAB scripting language, preferably in water or environmental research modelling studies
? Experience in development of PHP, Python and Java script codes to communicate with MySQL databases
? Experience in using REST framework tools and online APIs
? Experience using hydrodynamic modelling tools like Mike, SOBEK, HEC-RAS and others.
? Experience using hydrological models like NAM, HBV or others
? Excellent knowledge of English (oral and written) is a must. Knowledge of Spanish would be an asset.
This position is a temporary (project-based) position for maximum 1 year. The position is based in Delft, The Netherlands. A competitive salary (grade 10) is offered depending on qualifications and experience in accordance with the conditions of employment for Dutch Universities. Candidates are to be prepared to carry out short-term missions abroad. A Dutch work permit is required.
