7 June 2021 at 13:00-13:45 CEST (GMT +2)

Humans can only flourish where there is enough safe food for all. Safe food contributes to economic prosperity, is boosting agriculture, market access, tourism and sustainable development. Food safety supports many Sustainable Development Goals, which cannot be achieved as long as food is not safe for everyone.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO), together with the Codex Alimentarius Secretariat, will host a virtual event on 7 June to celebrate World Food Safety Day. They will discuss the crucial role of science in keeping food safe throughout the food chain. A few examples of successful and inspiring food safety stories will be shared from across the world.

The event will open with video messages from FAO Director-General QU Dongyu and WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

In the first part of the event, special guests, the Chief Scientists of both FAO and WHO, Ismahane Elouafi and Soumya Swaminathan, respectively, will talk about the role of science in underpinning international food standards, guidelines and advice, which are used and trusted by countries, industry and research communities across the world. They will also take part in a Q&A session with the audience.

In the second part, success stories from around the world and from across sectors and disciplines will highlight the sometimes-invisible jobs people do along the food chain and provide unique perspectives on how to promote food safety.

Food safety is everyone’s business: we all have a role to play. Join us on 7 June and learn a bit more about what others are doing to keep your food safe, and what you can do to help raise awareness and inspire action.

Interpretation will be available in Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish
