Location:  Teagasc Kildalton College, Piltown, Kilkenny

Grade/Salary: Appointments will be made at Agricultural Development Officer Grade 1 with a starting salary of €31,729

Basic Function:  To operate as part of a team in the development and delivery of land based education in general horticulture on a wide range of courses/programmes within the College and in particular to take responsibility for the nursery stock production elements of courses.

Duties and Responsibilities:

    Preparation and delivery of classes/lectures/practicals in Horticulture including: Nursery Stock Production, Plant propagation, Garden Centre Operations and other relevant core subjects.
    Preparation of assessment papers and skills assessments in accordance with QQI guidelines.
    Correcting, recording, collating, verifying examination results, mentoring students, informing students of their progress in the assessment system.
    Participation in relevant meetings relating to college activities.
    Provision of tutorials to students on classwork and practicals related to college course.
    Assisting with college open days, visiting of schools and career days in order to market the courses and give guidance on likely job opportunities for school leavers and mature students.
    To participate in the Teagasc Whole College Evaluation process as required.
    To assist management and administrative staff in achieving good governance and risk management through co-operation and adherence to administrative procedures and practices.
    To assist Teagasc in meeting the commitments of the Quality Customer Service charter and action plan through adherence to best practice protocols.
    Implementing quality assurance including internal verification.
    Managing health, safety and welfare of students.
    Supervision of students on work placement.
    Participation in the preparation and implementation of the annual college business plan.
    Assisting in the management and development of the college horticultural unit and specifically the college nursery.
    Sourcing, ordering and arranging delivery of necessary materials and maintenance of proper records of stock.

Qualifications

 Essential

    A Level 8 degree in Horticulture or equivalent.

Qualifications

Desirable

    A post graduate qualification in a relevant discipline.
    Registered pesticide advisor with DAFM.

Essential

    Experience of various methods of plant propagation.
    Strong IT skills.
    Strong communication and experience collaborating with stakeholders.
    Excellent organisational skills.
    Team working and leadership abilities.
    Quality and customer service focus.

Skills

Desirable

    Relevant experience of teaching is desirable.
    Experience of management of a nursery or garden centre.
