PhD Position: Determination of fruit and vegetable intake biomarkers in humans - Manchester Metropolitan University

The recent shift in NHS policy towards prevention versus treatment of chronic disease (i.e. the “Five Year Forward View”) means the development of accurate, objective dietary biomarkers is a timely endeavour, in pace with achieving national public health strategy. The primary aim of this project is to identify biomarkers of fruit and vegetable intake that can be used to improve dietary assessment in large-scale epidemiological studies and nutritional surveys. This is a multidisciplinary project, supported and coordinated by a team of experts in epidemiology, analytical biochemistry and nutrikinetics and will include:

• Systematic review and meta-analysis

• Human study design, with analysis of human tissue samples

• Advanced statistical modelling

The Position

This 5 year post combines a funded PhD studentship with a post graduate teaching assistant role in Food and Nutrition at Manchester Metropolitan University. This position represents a great opportunity to develop teaching skills alongside hands on experience in analytical biochemistry, plus expert training in nutritional epidemiology. The position includes paid fees and an annual salary of  £21,600 - £25,000, pro rata.

Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have a good (2:1 or First Class) undergraduate degree in food or nutrition or biochemistry or epidemiology or a relevant life sciences subject; excellent written and verbal communication skills and an enthusiasm for teaching; a general appreciation of the fields of nutrition, epidemiology, and biomarkers along with a willingness to learn a variety of new, multidisciplinary skills including, HPLC(MS) and advanced statistics. A postgraduate (Masters level) qualification in food, nutrition, biochemistry or epidemiology is desirable as is experience of one or more of:

- Wet lab skills, preferably in the area of analytical (bio)chemistry / bioanalytics

- Human tissue collection and storage

- Epidemiology

- Human intervention study design
