WorldFish: Nutrition Scientist

WorldFish is an international, non-profit research organization that harnesses the potential of fisheries and aquaculture to reduce hunger and poverty. Globally, more than two billion people are estimated to be deficient in essential vitamins and minerals, particularly vitamin A, iron and zinc. Micronutrient deficiencies during pregnancy and early childhood can severely affect health and development, often leading to irreversible effects.

When available and affordable, the consumption of animal-source foods can alleviate nutritional deficiencies and are a key component in a balanced and nutritious diet. For many people living in developing countries, especially those living near coastal and inland waters, fish are the primary animal-source food. Some small fish, when eaten whole, provide a particularly rich source of calcium, vitamin A, iron and zinc. WorldFish is undertaking research to better understand the contribution fish can make to improve nutrition and health.

Under the guidance of the Research Program Leader, the Nutrition Scientist will further WorldFish’s research agenda and ensure that production gains made through sustainable aquaculture and resilient small scale fisheries increase consumption of nutrient-rich fish and fish-based products, in particular in poor and vulnerable population groups, including in the first 1000 days of life. S/he will conduct research on nutrition-sensitive fish production systems, factors affecting fish consumption, especially in women and young children, development and utilization of fish-based products and the effect of fish consumption on maternal health and nutrition, child growth, development and cognition.

- Further develop research strategy on nutrition-sensitive fish production systems and ensure its effective implementation in countries where we work.
- In collaboration with WorldFish staff and partners, lead the initiation and timely submission of project proposals on fish for improved nutrition and health of women and children.
- Develop and implement innovative research activities in fish for improved nutrition and health.
- Develop and ensure effective utilization of tools, methods and indicators for nutrition-sensitive fish production and fish for improved nutrition and health.
- Publish quality research results in peer-reviewed journals as well as briefs, reports and through other media.
- Develop and strengthen our partnerships with global, regional and national researchers in nutrition-sensitive fish production and fish for improved nutrition and health, and with the CGIAR Research Program on Agriculture for Nutrition and Health (CRP A4NH).
- Ensure a pro-poor, innovative and gender responsive market-oriented approach
- Develop research plans and lead implementation ensuring quality and timely deliverables; monitor progress and prepare progress reports.
- Mentor young nutrition researchers in key program countries and build the research capacity for WorldFish and partners.
Candidates are sought with - A completed PhD in nutrition and health or related fields
- At least 3 years post-doctoral experience in applied nutrition and health research - Strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to work in multi-cultural, interdisciplinary teams as well as develop close and effective working relationships with a range of partners
- Strong professional network with researchers in nutrition and health or nutrition-sensitive agriculture
- Competency with quantitative research analytical tools, methodologies and analyses
- Ability and willingness to lead and carry out field work in developing countries - Peer-reviewed publications track-record, and excellent written and verbal communication skills in English

This global position will be based at a WorldFish program country or WorldFish’s HQ in Penang, Malaysia, with significant travel to various countries in Africa, Asia and Pacific. Interviews are expected to be held via video conference in October 2016.
The successful candidate should be available to commence by 1st January 2017 for an initial 3 years contract, with possibility of extension depending on performance of and the availability of funding. Only short-listed candidates will be notified.
